I have loved strong beers for almost as long as I can remember! Probably the influence of Belgium which was my first love when it came to beer. When we talk about 11.9% and more, it is a niche that is very little exploited in Quebec and whose place was occupied almost entirely by the Îles-de-la-Madeleine microbrewery, À l’abri de la Tempête.
It must be said that the production of a beer above 11.9% alcohol requires a special permit and is subject to a surcharge. So, imagine my surprise when I saw a 15% beer appear so close to home… 😉
Let’s enjoy without further delay!
On the nose, it smells of chocolate ice cream, burnt caramel and vanilla. We smell some hints of alcohol but always in keeping with the rest of the perfumes.
On the palate, it’s an explosion of flavors mainly reminiscent of desserts. It can remind us of sponge toffee, walnuts, Tiramisu cake, vanilla, caramelized malt, boozy cherries or chocolate cake. All of this in a single, beautifully balanced sip—that’s impressive!
In addition, the alcohol level of 15% strongly contributes to maintaining a delicate balance with the sweeter flavors and brings a depth rarely exploited for the style.
As for the finish, the syrupy texture slowly fades into a beautiful, very pleasant warmth!
I don’t always want that intensity, but if I do, it’s an easy choice! I love Beauregard’s experiments. You rarely go wrong with this specialized microbrewery.
