Adeptus Tenebris Blinded by daylight, in the darkness you shall see. Style inspiration: Bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout Alcohol: 11% alc./vol. Description Mutual admirers and both fans of horror films and video games, Shawinigan-based microbrewery Le Trou du diable and Montreal studio Red Barrels have joined forces to bring you Adeptus Tenebris. Inspired by the video game Outlast, this dark blend is a bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout pierced by a glimmer of saison aged in Sauternes barrels. It offers aromas of toasted bread and cocoa, followed on the palate by a thread of tartaric acidity and oxidative notes covered in black cherries. The result is dark, somewhat menacing, but undeniably captivating. Drink alone or with others in complete darkness...
I have always really liked the barrel-aged beers from Le Trou du diable. I even continue to buy them, discreetly, out of sight… 😉
I understand the idea of primarily supporting independent microbreweries but I don’t want to deny myself something I enjoy. I also tell myself that barrel-aged beers should not enrich multinationals too much. 😉 In any case, the passion is still there and this beer proves it. Besides, I thank Le Trou du diable for this offering.
For this special beer, Adeptus Tenebris, I go there in complete darkness!
On the nose it smells of wood, ripe grapes and cocoa.
On the palate, it is of extraordinary complexity. There is dark chocolate, red fruits and delicately sour green grapes.
We are between malt, wood and the vinous side. It’s honestly splendid!
The acidity, which never takes up too much space, mixes with a bourbon-like character reminiscent of chocolate brownies. We are in the ripe, semi-sour black cherry, like a black forest cake.
While being extremely fine and complex, other sweet flavors such as shortbread and caramel perfectly accompany the fruity and tannic notes.
It truly is a work of art.
